How Blockchain is Leading us Towards a Better Environment And Safer World?

The Blockchain Environment is one of the most crucial factors for our world today. However, the increasing industrialization and pollution have adversely affected it and resulted in issues like climate change.

However, the good thing is that the world has become more aware in recent years. More and more countries are working towards conserving the environment. Thankfully, the latest developments in digital technologies have also made it easier for us to track and reduce the conventional processes that harm our environment. One such technology is Blockchain. In this article, we will learn about different ways in which Blockchain can help us to reduce the harmful effects on the environment.

Power Grids running on decentralized technology

The centralized concentration of conventional power grids creates critical efficiency gaps in distributing energy with the unconsumed surplus in some areas while other areas struggle with low availability. With no access to power generators the marginalized society, refugees, and citizens of poor regions lead a very difficult life. Along with disrupting the domestic routine it also affects their social-economical lives. Lack of power in an agriculture-based rural economy, for instance, means low harvest and less income.

With the help of decentralized Blockchain technology, it is now possible to create decentralized power grids. Such power grids work smartly and with strategic functionality, it can produce the same amount of electricity without harming the environment.

Streamlined supply chain management to trace the origins

With increasing environmental awareness more customers prefer products that are made responsibly and in harmony with nature. Several companies even provide this information advertising their nature-friendly manufacturing and sourcing processes. The issue, however, is to verify the veracity of this information. Terms like organic, fair trade, eco-friendly and natural are also being used by many companies as a part of marketing tactics as consumers cannot verify the ground processes first-hand.

Blockchain connects different blocks and due to its irreversible model, it is not possible to change the data. It allows the clients to check the origins of any items and ensure if it is really procured from legit sources following fair trade practices.

Reducing carbon footprint in food industry

Machine-heavy food production and long-distance traveling of food significantly contribute to the carbon footprint while hurting the interests of small local producers. The first step to set things right is to educate and empower the customers to track the origins of their food.  For instance, with Blockchain technology, the consumers can now verify with certainty that the coffee with a “locally-produced” label is fully sourced from the native farmers of the region at fair prices. It will encourage them to prefer natively produced/sourced foods over imported contents.

In the future, we will also see a huge jump in the popularity of environment-friendly online stores powered by Blockchain which will further help in minimizing the brick and mortar stores and the pollution issues associated with them.

Ensuring the veracity of carbon credit cards

Carbon credit cards are offered as a reward by the government to the entities that use environmentally friendly alternatives in their respective industries. The global carbon credits scheme is maintained at a whopping annual cost of over 950 million dollars but illegal selling of these credits is not uncommon. With immutable purchase/sales and utilization of these credits, such malpractices can be efficiently curbed and it assures the ethical use of these credits.

  • Many regions still lack a proper banking infrastructure and it plays a spoiler in official funds transferring. With Blockchain-based money transfer it would be easier to quickly transfer funds to the needy/deserving entities in an official, legal and verifiable manner without depending upon centralized authorities or intermediaries.
  • The current state of the recycling process needs an overhauling. Presently, the municipal system and governing agencies are fully responsible for initiating, running, and maintaining recycling facilities/programs. Each region works separately and is restricted by the individual resource/funding limitations. No wonder, the non-prime or sub-urban areas are often at a disadvantageous position with many of them completely lacking recycling campaigns.
  • The reward system can also be used to further the impact of eco-friendly products by encouraging people to use their crypto rewards for buying eco-friendly fuel and petroleum substitutes at subsidized rates.
